Rongai Route

The first part of Rongai route (also known as Loitokitok- or Nalemuru-route) starts out on the bleak northern slopes of Kilimanjaro.

But although the scenery the way up is not as beautiful as on some other routes, the abundance of wildlife and solitude you'll find on this route up is probably the best of all.

You'll descent from the peak using the Marangu route, so anything you might have missed on the bleaker northern slopes on the way up, you'll find here on the lush Marangu route (see Marangu for details).

There is an option for an extra acclimatization day. When choosing this (recommended!), you'll follow a different route (which as an added bonus is generally considered to be very beautiful) from the second day and sleep at the Mawenzi Tarn Huts. You'll rejoin the original Rongai route only at School Huts, just before the final ascend to Uhuru peak. Because of the remote location prices for this itinerary include accommodation before departure in the vicinity of Loitokitok gate.

Rongai Day 1:

Loitokitok (2,000m) -First Cave Campsite (2,650m) Environment: Plantations, Rain forest, Heath land Distance: 6.5 km / 3.4 miles Net. elevation: +650 m / +2,145 ft You will be picked up after breakfast at your accommodation, then transported to the Naromoru village for an early starts of your Kilimanjaro Adventure. You'll experience a relatively gentle introduction trek the first day, through a small forest, which shelters a variety of flowers and animal life. Then continuing over rocks and between scrub to the camp at 2700 m, for first dinner and tent overnight.

Day 2 - First Camp to Kikelewa Camp

First thing in the morning are the glorious views of Mawenzi to the south and Kibo to the west, and after breakfast you start the days hike towards the Kikelewa Camp. You'll have an attractive day allowing the trail westwards, steadily rising into heath and moorland. Your path passes several caves, and you'll be on the trek for 5 to 6 hours till your destination 3600 m above sea level.

Day 3 - Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Today the path is heading south, and climbs steadily on a ridge with fantastic views. On either side of you other ridges are rising as well, making the whole area rugged. At the end of today's relatively steep hike you round a rock outcrop and Mawenzi Tarn reveal itself set beneath the blasted, shattered slopes of Kilimanjaro's second summit.

Day 4 - Acclimatization day to Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Use the day to explore the area. Clamber up onto Mawenzi's foothills; check out the area and the damaged rock slopes that make Mawenzi such a challenge to climb. Use the opportunity to climb higher before dropping to sleep at a lower elevation, but make sure you are careful, since the slopes here are unstable and rock falls might occur.

Day 5 - Mawenzi Tarn Hut to Kibo Hut

Today you will enjoy a simple day that culminates with you being in a position to tackle the final summit challenge. Little additional height is gained as you hike across the lunar-like Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. But in bad weather, this stretch is an exposed section of the mountain. Camping and dinner at Kibo Hut. Early bedtime to prepare for the night ascent to the top!

Day 6 Kibo Hut to Gilman's Point to Uhuru Peak.

Up no later than 02.00 for the night's attempt to reach the top. It takes 5 hours to reach Gilman's Point, 5681 m. From here you will use about one and a half hour to reach Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa at 5,895 m. Descent to Horombo Hut for overnight.

Day 7 - Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Arusha/Moshi.

After breakfast down to the Marangu Gate via Mandara Hut. Transport from here to the Airport or your accommodation in Arusha or Moshi.
